Designed for Health care workers
This offering may be right for you if you feel fatigue or injury from chronic or situational stress.
Short-term stress can lead to long-term growth and resilience. However, depending on a variety of factors, it can also lead to chronic stress, stress injury, and even mental illness (Shanafelt, Ripp, Brown, & Sinsky 2020). Such factors include when the stressor persists (>6 months) without a post-trauma safety period, such as a pandemic (Jarero & Uribe 2011; 2012).
Stress injuries are caused by experiencing or witnessing:
-
A life-threatening situation
-
Death or loss of people, things, or parts of identity
-
Actions that conflict with your moral values
-
An accumulation of stress over time without sufficient rest or recovery
Additional signs include no longer feeling like normal self, insomnia or sleep disturbance, shame, guilt or blame, panic, rage or depression, nightmares, intrusive thoughts, and loss of control.
With sufficient rest and support, stress injuries can heal on their own. Without, they can often get worse.
Effective care for the community givers
EMDR is gold-standard treatment for trauma and other distressing life events. Group EMDR was specifically developed to address situational, acute, or ongoing traumatic stress and provides affordable access to treatment.
Research suggests symptoms can improve within one 90-minute group session, though 6 sessions are recommended.
EMDR is different than typical therapy or support groups. Instead of interpersonal discussions, group EMDR focuses on allowing the brain to resume its natural healing. This allows for facilitators to guide everyone as they individually process a recent or ongoing stress injury. Individuals will not be asked to share their stories nor hold space for the stories of others.
